It is a common misconception that bullying is mostly physical. The real danger of bullying lies with the emotional impact it has on your child. These factors will affect them in varying ways, such as depression, low self esteem, poor academic achievement and shyness to much more serious effects such as suicidal tendencies…
With that in mind, it’s important in your role as a parent to be alert to any signs that your child is a victim or the perpetrator of act of bullying. You should be especially vigilant to new channels of emotional bullying i.e. texting, sending of cruel photos from a mobile phone, emails and web-based attacks. This is referred to as cyber bullying
Attacks can take the form of:
- Sexual. Unwanted physical contact or abusive comments.
- Homophobic – Defined as any offensive or hostile action against gay males, lesbians, bisexuals or those perceived to be lesbian, gay or bisexual.
- Abuse – special needs children are often targets. Bullying of children who lost someone in the family can also be targeted
- Racist. Taunts of a racial nature, graffiti, gestures
If you become of aware of bullying, it’s important to know that there are resources and help for parents available online. It would be best to seek out as much information as you can to educate yourself on how to best handle the situation.
